Referral Guide for Faculty and Staff

From time to time, faculty and staff may encounter students who experience psychological problems. Students may seek help in crisis situations, with adjustment problems, or for other common concerns. When students present problems beyond your abilities to help them, it is important to make a timely referral to the Counseling Center. A word of caution may be helpful to avoid any misunderstanding between faculty/staff and student.

Tax filing in the United States is complicated. Taxes in the U.S. are reconciled every April with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for the previous tax year. The filing deadline for the 2024 calendar year is April 15, 2025.

YSU International Student/Scholar Health Insurance Requirement

If you are an F-1 or J-1 student or J-1 visiting scholar and your Form I-20 or Form DS-2019 was issued by the Youngstown State University, enrollment in YSU’s international student health insurance plan is mandatory during the entire time you are a F-1 or J-1 student or scholar at Youngstown State University.

Inviting Extended Family and Friends to the U.S.

Many students wish to invite family and friends* for a short visit to the United States. The B-2 visitor visa is a good choice for visits of 6 months or fewer in duration or for family members who do not qualify for an F-2 dependent visa. As a student, you can provide supporting documents for the B-2 visa application.

Adding a Spouse or Child (F-2 Dependents)

The spouse and unmarried minor children (under age 21) of the F-1 student may apply for F-2 immigration status. To bring your spouse or child to the U.S. in F-2 status, follow the steps below:
