Financial Requirements

International students are required by the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services to show adequate proof of their ability to support themselves and any family members they wish to accompany them during their studies in the United States. Each institution of higher learning is required to have on file proof of the student's ability to pay. However, many international students are able to secure part-time on-campus student employment positions. It is illegal for international students to work off-campus without prior authorization.

Apply as a Visiting or Exchange Student

Visiting/exchange students are non-degree seeking at YSU and are currently enrolled at one of YSU’s partner universities. Visiting/exchange students will be holding a J-1 Visa while studying at YSU. 
Visiting/exchange applicants need to be nominated by their home universities before initiating the YSU international application. YSU does not accept individual visiting/exchange applications without receiving the nomination from partner universities.

For Admission to Bachelor and Associate Degree Programs, applicants whose education is from an English-medium secondary or post-secondary institution in certain countries (see below) are exempt from the standardized English proficiency testing requirement.

A bachelor's degree from non-regionally accredited institutions may be considered acceptable for admission. These are reviewed by the Admission and Appeals Committee.

How to Apply -- International Conditional Admissions

An applicant meeting all the requirements for admission except the specified level of English proficiency may be admitted conditionally. This admission is conditional upon successful completion of English language study in ESL program at YSU English Language Institute (ELI). Conditional admission is applicable for both undergraduate and graduate applicants. To apply, please follow the instructions below.

For admission purposes, someone is considered an international applicant if they are NOT a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, or do not hold refugee status or political asylum status. Those who are U.S. citizens, permanent residents, refugees or political asylum holders, should apply for the domestic student application.
