Authorization for a Reduced Course Load

To maintain status, F-1 and J-1 students must enroll full-time during two of the three academic semesters each year. In most cases, students will be enrolled full-time for the Fall and Spring semester and take Summer as a vacation semester. At YSU, “full-time” is defined as 12 credit hours for undergraduate students and 9 credit hours for graduate students.

International Student Documents and Maintaining Legal Immigration Status

International students are required to abide by United States immigration regulations throughout their stay in the U.S. International students are admitted to the US by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for the purpose of being full-time students. Participation by students in any other activity, from employment to vacation, is considered to be a privilege and is only allowable in accordance with strict DHS rules.

Counseling Resources

Youngstown State University provides free and confidential counseling services to current students who are seeking to make a desired change within their lives. Students who utilize individual counseling services will experience face-to-face meetings with a therapist or counselor to discuss any difficult thoughts or emotions in which they are currently experiencing.

International Coffee Hour

In a relaxed atmosphere over coffee, tea, snacks & music, come meet fellow students, both domestic and international, plus faculty, staff, and community members. Forming relationships and making friends is what international coffee hour is all about! International Coffee Hour has become one of the BEST social experiences on campus. Coffee Hours are usually held on Fridays twice a month during the academic year, from 3:00-5:00 PM, and are widely publicized.
