FERPA

What is FERPA?

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974; A federal law designed to:

  • protect the privacy of education records;
  • establish the right of students to inspect and review their education records.

YSU recognizes the importance of protecting the confidentiality of student information while complying fully with FERPA.

Grades

Grading Scale

YSU does not have a University-wide grading scale. Therefore, each YSU instructor may determine what percentage scale to use in his/her class. The college grade is posted to both the high school and college transcript.

YSU does define grades in the following manner (quoted from the YSU Undergraduate Catalog):

You can access academic support services during the term you are enrolled in classes. Click the name of each service to visit their website.

Accessibility Services

In accordance with University procedures, if you have a documented disability and require accommodations to obtain equal access to this course; please contact your instructor privately to discuss your specific needs.

Student Transcripts

What is an “official” transcript?

An official transcript is a record generated by the University Records Office as proof that you enrolled in and successfully completed a college course. To be considered “official,” the transcript must never touch the student’s hands. Therefore, one university must send the official transcript directly to the new university for it to be recognized for credit.

Being a College Student

What to Expect

Expect a faster pace, greater personal responsibility, and higher standards than you would in a typical high school course. Expect, also, that the other students in the course will share your high level of motivation.

Course Syllabus

The first step toward success in any college class is to carefully read the syllabus. In addition to assignments, a course syllabus will contain vital information on course expectations, instructor contact information, key dates, advising, and grading. Think of the syllabus as THE course roadmap.

Student Advisement

You meet with a YSU academic advisor regarding how your course(s) apply to YSU graduation requirements. You receive directions on how to meet with an advisor during your new student orientation or continuing student pre-advisement session with YSU CCP staff. Meeting with an advisor is mandatory per the state CCP rules!

Summer Eligibility

You are allowed to take up to 30 high school and college credits a year under College Credit Plus. This includes the summer semester. Summer begins the academic year, so your 30 credits include summer, fall, and spring terms.

We strongly encourage you to discuss your high school schedule with your school counselor before scheduling summer courses. Students who need to maintain eligibility for athletics or extracurricular activities may need to adjust their high school and/or college schedule in the fall or spring semester.
