Wednesday, April 19, 5:30 p.m. reception, 6:15 p.m. dinner. Annual Faculty Recognition Dinner in the Chestnut Room of Kilcawley Center. The late Joseph Edwards, former dean of the College of Fine and Performing Arts, will receive the Heritage Award posthumously. Also at the dinner, 33 outstanding faculty members will receive Distinguished Professor Awards, and, for the first time, adjunct faculty members will be honored with the Part-Time Faculty Teaching Excellence Awards.
Wednesday, April 19, 12:15 p.m. The Dana School of Music’s Guitar Studio performs a free Music at Noon concert in the Butler Institute of American Art.
Thursday, April 20. The Department of Art hosts a gallery reception and workshop by guest artist Carrie Longley. The reception is 11:30 a.m. in the Judith Rae Solomon Gallery, second floor, Bliss Hall, while the workshop is 2 p.m. in Bliss Hall Room 1062. Both events are free and open to the public.
Friday, April 21, 7 p.m. Margaret Atwood, winner of many international literary awards and author of more than 40 books of fiction, poetry and critical essays, presents YSU Skeggs Lecture in Stambaugh Auditorium. The presentation is free and open to the public, but tickets are required. Tickets are available at the Stambaugh box office or online at www.stambaughauditorium.com.
Friday, April 21 through May 5. The works of 29 graduating YSU art students are featured in the Spring Graduating BFA Exhibition in the McDonough Museum of Art on campus. An opening reception is set for 6 to 8 p.m. The museum is open Tuesdays through Saturdays, 11a.m. to until 4 p.m. The museum is open to the public and admission is free.
Friday, Saturday and Sunday April 21, 22 and 23. YSU presents two short operas celebrating “From Mozart to Menotti” in Ford Theater, Bliss Hall on the YSU campus. The evening, presented by YSU’s Donald P. Pipino Performing Arts Series and the Dana School of Music, features The Medium by Gian Carlo Menotti and The Impresario by W.A. Mozart. Friday and Saturday performances are at 7:30 p.m., and the Sunday matinee performance is 2 p.m. Tickets at 330-941-3105 or www.ysu.tix.com.
Friday, April 21, 8 p.m. “Gasbags and Blowhards: Supermassive Black Holes in the Universe” is the topic of a free lecture by Sarah Gallagher of Western University (London Canada) in the YSU Ward Beecher Planetarium.
Saturday, April 22, 2 to 11 p.m. Penguin Productions hosts the third annual Federal Frenzy in partnership with the City of Youngstown and The Summit 90.7 FM. The event is a music and arts festival that celebrates the talents of YSU students and the greater Youngstown community. West Federal Street in downtown Youngstown will host vendors and outdoor performances by regional and national acts, while downtown venues will feature live musical performance from YSU students, faculty and staff.
