Geological Facilities
Adding to the department's resources is the Natural Gas and Water Resources Institute, which promotes environmentally responsible exploration and production of oil and gas resources, as well as provides educational programs and resources to improve understanding of shale gas and associated environmental concerns.
Geological and Environmental Science Facilities
There are several labs, equipment and resources that are geared toward assisting in your education:
Engineering Facilities
X-Ray Facility
- The Bruker AXS ApexII is a single crystal diffractometer, offering one of the most powerful techniques to determine material structures. It was installed in 2000 and has since been extensively upgraded.
- The Bruker AXS X8 Prospector was installed in 2014. We primarily use it to collect data from the smallest of molecule samples, like DNA, RNA and proteins.
- The Bruker AXS D8 Quest was also installed in 2014.
Chemistry Facilities
Structure and Instrumentation Facility
The Structure and Instrumentation facility specializes in the characterization of non-biological materials. Its goal is to serve the educational and research needs of the students and faculty at YSU and at collaborating regional colleges.
In addition to the smaller GC-MS, chromatographic, spectroscopic, physical and analytical instruments, the facility houses:
STEM Facilities
Science Facilities
Ward Beecher Hall houses the departments of Biology, Chemistry, and Physics and Astronomy. The five-story original unit was constructed in 1958, a major addition was built in 1967 and a small addition comprising chemical storerooms was completed in 1997. The building contains 31 laboratories, including a planetarium and greenhouse, nine classrooms, 53 faculty-research rooms and a conference/seminar room.
Other key science facilities include:
Research
Impacting both the university and the business community, we offer academic programs, collaborative initiatives and internship opportunities that center around research in the STEM fields. Beyond traditional classroom learning, students apply their knowledge in laboratory and research settings to solve real-world challenges facing today's technology industries.
Accreditiation
