In The Vocation of a Teacher, Wayne Booth, the literary critic and longtime English professor, posed a question that floats into my mind every May: "Why, if I claim to love teaching so much, am I so relieved when it’s over?"
What to do and what not to do
During my initial week on the tenure track, I set an example of incompetence that, to my knowledge, no other assistant professor has emulated. I lost the key to my new office—twice.
New Faculty Orientation welcomes full-time faculty members to Youngstown State University, and begins the formal faculty development and mentorship process. Attendees are familiarized with university culture, benefits, policies, and procedures during a two-day workshop.
TLC also offers orientation to new department chairs and new part-time faculty members.
"Faculty Learning Communities" are relatively small groups who spend a year working on teaching and learning topics. The group, ideally interdisciplinary, may select focus courses or projects in which to try out innovations and assess learning, presenting project results to campus (at minimum).
Faculty Development seeks to support the professional development of all faculty (full-time and part-time, tenure and non-tenure track, graduate teaching assistants) across all career stages in the areas of teaching, research, service, and work/life balance.
