Two campus events commemorate 9/11 attacks
Youngstown State University Student Government and Student Diversity Programs sponsor a commemoration of the 16th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 11, on the campus core of the university.
Meanwhile, police officers who died during the attacks will be honored at a ceremony noon Monday, Sept. 11, on the second floor of Cushwa Hall. The event sponsored by the YSU Department of Criminal Justice and Forensic Sciences will include the reading of the names of officers who died.
The event on the campus core will include remarks by Eddie Howard, associate vice president for Student Experience; Rayann Atway, president, Student Government Association; YSU President Jim Tressel; Tony Spano, memorial organizer; and Martha Pallante, associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences.
YSU Army ROTC will present the colors.
The commemoration also will include a timeline of the events of the attacks, including the Flight 11 crash into the north tower of the World Trade Center, the Flight 175 crash into the south tower of the World Trade Center, the Flight 77 crash into the Pentagon, and the crash of Flight 93 in Somerset County, Pa.
The series of four attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, were coordinated by the terrorist group al-Qaeda. The attacks killed 2,996 people, injured more than 6,000 others and caused at least $10 billion in infrastructure and property damage.
