Summer Honors Institute deadline March 3
Application deadline is March 3 for the Summer Honors Institute at Youngstown State University, which will be held June 11 to 16 on campus.
The program offers gifted and talented high school students the opportunity to live and learn on campus for one week in the summer to explore new topics and studies. Students can register for either the residential or commuter option; residential students live on campus for the week in the Honors College residence halls in addition to taking courses taught during the day, while commuter students travel to campus each day to participate in courses.
Courses are developed by university faculty with the dual purpose of introducing students to disciplines that typically are not available to them in a high school setting and providing activities designed for in-depth study. Students are assigned to a morning and afternoon course.
This year’s curriculum includes favorites such as:
- Crime Scene Analysis
- Rapid Prototyping
- Audition and Monologue Workshop and Performance
- Healthcare in the 21st Century
- Harry Potter
- Documentary Filmmaking
- International Business
New classes offered this year include:
- Electronic Music
- Coding Python with Raspberry Pi
- Native American Philosophy
- City of You: The Branding of Youngstown, Ohio
- Acoustic Ecology and Sound Art
The week concludes with an afternoon celebration on Friday with presentations to friends, family members and special guests.
The cost of the residential option is $385, which includes meals, room and linens. The commuter fee is $100, and parking is available in university lots at the daily rate.
SHI is open to students who have completed the 9th, 10th or 11th grade by the time the June program begins; and who have been formally identified as gifted and talented by their state's criteria for gifted identification, or by YSU Honors College requirements (3.5 GPA; 26 ACT or 1260 new SAT). Application packets and course descriptions are available on the YSU Summer Honors Institute website. Applications must be received no later than March 3. The fee may be paid online or by mailing a check or money order with the application. Course assignments will be made on a first-come, first-served basis.
