High school students join with YSU Wind Ensemble for Oct. 18 concert

Musicians from 20 area high schools join students from the Youngstown State University Dana School of Music Wind Ensemble in concert 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, in Stambaugh Auditorium in Youngstown.

Also performing is the YSU Concert Band. Tickets are $7 for adults, $6 for senior citizens and students from other schools, and are free for anyone with a YSU ID.

The high school students who will perform alongside the YSU Wind Ensemble during the final portion of the concert.

“This is a fabulous way for high school students to experience all that goes into a college performance,” Dana Professor Stephen Gage said. “They will sit right beside our Dana School of Music students on the Stambaugh stage during a rehearsal and performance. Our students and faculty will work with them throughout this process to showcase the level of musicianship necessary for one of our performances.”

The YSU Concert Band opens the performance with a repertoire including Frank Ticheli’s Joy Revisited, Leonard Bernstein’s Candide Suite, and March Grandioso by Roland Seitz.

Following the Concert Band, the YSU Wind Ensemble opens its portion of the program with Antonin Dvorak's Carnival Overture as set by former YSU Professor of Theory and Composition Mark Walker. Walker was a faculty member from 1968-1985, and this transcription was first performed by the YSU Wind Ensemble.

Graduate assistant Ryan Dutton will conduct Henry Fillmore's march, Rolling Thunder, followed by Paul Dooley's Mavericks and Michael Giacchino's The Incredibles, from the 2004 movie soundtrack.

After intermission, the 91-member combined YSU Wind Ensemble and High School Side-By-Side Honors Wind Ensemble opens its performance with Frank Ticheli's An American Elegy. The concludes with John Barnes Chance's first composition, Incantation and Dance.
