"Empty Bowls" at McDonough Museum raises funds for Rescue Mission
Empty Bowls, an international project to fight hunger featuring handmade ceramic bowls, comes to Youngstown State University’s McDonough Museum of Art 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3.
The event is presented by the YSU Department of Art’s Ceramics Program.
Empty Bowls starts with local artists creating handmade bowls. The YSU Ceramics Program hosted open studio workshops throughout the year for students and local volunteers to create the bowls.
Those attending the event choose an “empty bowl” in exchange for a donation and receive a simple meal to enjoy. The bowl is meant to be taken home as a symbol of participation in helping feed those in need in Youngstown.
Proceeds benefit the Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley, the only emergency shelter in Mahoning County. The Mission hosts an average of 130 people nightly and last year served on average 631 meals daily.
Donations/tickets are $15 online at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/empty-bowls-ysu-2016-to-benefit-rescue-mission-of-mahoning-valley-tickets-24381289092, or $20 at the door. One ticket includes the bowl and food. Children’s food only tickets are $5, 10 years and under. There are three seating times – 11 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m.
Parking is available in the YSU Wick Deck. Take the level 3 bridge to the back entrance of the McDonough Museum. In case of construction, please follow posted detours to use Walnut Street entrance to the deck.
