Academics and Research

Engaging in research as a college student provides invaluable benefits that extend beyond the classroom. Involvement in research deepens understanding of academic fields, sharpens critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and offers hands-on experience that prepares students for future careers or advanced studies. Collaborative research builds teamwork and communication abilities, while presenting findings enhances confidence and public speaking skills. Additionally, research opportunities often foster strong mentor relationships with faculty, open doors to internships or fellowships, and help students stand out in competitive job markets or graduate school applications.

Support for research

YSU’s Office of Research Services offers a variety of resources for researchers including information on CITI Training, which must be completed prior to submitting an Institutional Research Board request.

Finding Research

Here are some effective ways for students to find research opportunities:

  • Talk to Professors: Reach out to faculty members whose classes or research areas interest you. Many professors are eager to involve motivated students in their projects.
  • Apply for Structured Programs: Look into formal undergraduate research programs, such as summer research experiences for undergraduates.
  • Leverage Online Tools: Use platforms like Handshake, accessible through the YSU Penguin Portal, to search for research roles or internships.
  • Network with Peers: Connect with classmates or student organizations that are involved in research—they may know about open positions or helpful contacts.
  • Volunteer or Shadow: Offer to assist in a lab or project on a volunteer basis to gain experience and establish connections that can lead to future paid opportunities.
  • Explore External Opportunities: Research national or international programs, like NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) or similar initiatives in your field
  • Attend Research Events: Participate in research fairs, symposiums, or departmental seminars to learn about faculty projects and network with researchers.
