Bio
Dr Edmund Ickert joined the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Program as an Assistant Professor in 2019. He previously received training as a Certified Lymphedema Therapist (CLT) in 2015. Dr Ickert has spent 8 years previously working in a skilled nursing facility (SNF) as a Physical Therapist. During his time in the SNF, Dr Ickert worked with the geriatric population for both subacute rehabilitation and outpatient services (including aquatic therapy). He completed his PhD in Health Sciences in 2022. Dr Ickert is an active member of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA).
Research Interests
As a member of the Graduate Studies in Rehabilitation Sciences department, I have had an opportunity to network with various healthcare professionals (both internally and externally) on a variety of different research areas. My list of research interests includes both prior work and future areas of work:
1. Cardiopulmonary Physical Therapy (vital assessment, education, intervention)
2. Lymphedema
3. Kinesiotaping
4. Aquatic Therapy
5. Dry Needling
6. Informed Consent/Adverse Events Reporting
7. Falls and Fall Prevention
8. Acute Care and ICU
Teaching Interests
My current teaching interests span both our Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program and the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Health Sciences program.
My primary DPT program teaching responsibilities include:
1. Cardiopulmonary Physical Therapy content (anatomy, physiology, risk factors, vital and cardiopulmonary assessment, intervention).
2. Acute Care/ICU (evaluation, intervention, safety, outcomes, prognosis, goals, equipment, monitoring, decision making, mobility, discharge planning).
3. Lymphedema (evaluation, intervention, anatomy, physiology)
4. Applied Neuroscience (anatomy, physiology, pathways, neuro structures - basal ganglia, cerebellum, limbic system, reticular formation, frontal lobe, motor/sensory pathways, brainstem structures).
5. Neurological Pathologies (TBI, Parkinson Disease, Guillen Barre)
6. Advanced Cases and Decision Making (complex cardiopulmonary cases with use of evidence based practice to guide decision making)
My secondary DPT program teaching responsibilities include:
1. Cancer/Oncology
2. Clinical Skills (goniometry, muscle length testing, manual muscle testing)
3. General Anatomy (musculoskeletal system - Spine and Extremities)
4. Neurological Content (assessment, intervention, decision making, risk factors, PNF).
5. Neurological Pathology (Stroke, Multiple Sclerosis, Spinal Cord)
6. Amputation (evaluation, intervention, types, equipment)
7. Orthotics/Prosthetics (types, evaluation, intervention)
8. Wheelchair (equipment, evaluation)
My responsibilities in the PhD of Health Sciences program include:
1. Dissertation Committee appointments
2. Mentored Research
