YSU's record delegation invades Chicago sports medicine conference
Thirty-two students and two faculty members from Youngstown State University attended the 47th Annual Meeting of the Midwest Chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine in Chicago earlier this fall.
It was YSU’s largest ever delegation to the conference. MWACSM is one of 12 regional chapters within the ACSM - the largest sports medicine and exercise science organization in the world.
Three YSU students and one faculty member made presentations:
- Students Lauren E. Falasca and Tariq A. Amireh presented “Student Physical Activity at a University Recreation Center: Understanding the Why Behind the What.” Associate Professor and Chair Sara Michaliszyn and Professor Nicole Mullins of the Department of Kinesiology and Sport Science were co-authors and mentors on the project. The study explored relationships between individuals’ “big five” personality traits and their types, intensities, and durations of recreational PA engagement, and their motives and barriers to PA participation.
- Student Megan Kulisek presented “Effects of Exercise Desks on Activity and Reading Skills Youth with Neurodevelopmental Disorders.” Associate Professor and Chair Sara Michaliszyn and Professor Nicole Mullins of the Department of Kinesiology and Sport Science were co-authors and mentors on the project. The purpose of the study was to determine the effect of exercise desks on levels of physical activity and classroom performance in fourth- and seventh-grade students with neurodevelopmental disorders.
- Nicole Mullins, professor of Kinesiology and Sport Science, presented, “Classroom Physical Activity Breaks: Goodness Too Great to Ignore; PE’s Not Enough Any More.”
In addition, the team of Cali Apthhorpe, Dominic DiFrancesco and Haneen Kotb competed against teams from 19 other colleges and universities throughout the Midwest in Quizbowl.
