YSU Summer Honors Institute deadline April 5
The deadline is April 5 for gifted high school students to apply for the 2019 Summer Honors Institute July 15 to 18 on the campus of Youngstown State University.
Application packets and course descriptions are available at ysu.edu/honors.
Participants must be entering 10th, 11th or 12th grade during the 2019-20 academic year. They also must be formally identified as gifted and talented, or they must meet at least one of the qualifications for admission to the YSU Honors College (3.5 accumulative GPA or ACT composite score of 26 or above). A building principal, gifted coordinator, guidance counselor, school psychologist or other administrator must verify students’ eligibility.
SHI students attend courses on campus designed to introduce them to a specific discipline that is not available in high school and to provide activities for more in-depth study. Courses are also designed to provide a high degree of student interaction using a variety of "hands-on" activities.
Among the courses are: Coding Python with Raspberry Pi, Documentary Filmmaking, Harry Potter, Potato Cannon, Amateur Radio, Healthcare for the 21st Century, Exploring Youngstown and Its People, and Solid Modeling/3D Printing.
There is a $100 nonrefundable participation fee for commuter students, which covers lunches for the week and dinner on Thursday. A residential option is also available for students wanting to spend the week on campus. The cost of the residential component is $385, which includes meals, room and linens. Structured learning activities are offered each night. Students will check-in on the afternoon of Sunday, July 14.
The fees may be paid online or by mailing a check or money order with the application. Applications are processed and course assignments made after payments are received. Course assignments will be made on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information, contact Sharyn Fees at sefees@ysu.edu or 330-941-4740.
