YSU's celebration of Women's History Month kicks off 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 2, with the screening of "Good Work Sister!: Women Shipyard Workers of World War II" at the Steel Museum.

Youngstown State University’s Women and Gender Studies program celebrates Women’s History Month with a series of events throughout March:Wednesday, March 2, 11 to 11:50 a.m. “Good Work Sister!: Women Shipyard Workers of World War II,” film screening and panel discussion, Youngstown Historical Center of Industry and Labor (Steel Museum), 151 West Wood St., 330-941-1314. Discussion will be facilitated by YSU History Professor Martha Pallante. Other participating YSU faculty include Donna DeBlasio, Anne York and Sherri Lovelace-Cameron.Thursday, March 3, 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. Sexual Harassment, discussion, Kilcawley Center, Presidents’ Suite. Seminar will answer questions such as what is sexual harassment, how can you prevent it, and how can you help create a safer and more comfortable learning environment for everyone on campus, regardless of gender.Friday, March 4, 11 to 11:50 a.m. Rosa Clemente, lecture and Q&A, Kilcawley Center, Ohio Room. Co-sponsored with Africana Studies, College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, Latino Student Organization, and Buenos Vecinos (the YSU Spanish Club). Rosa Clemente has been a community organizer, scholar, journalist and Hip Hop activist for more than 20 years. In the 2008 U.S. election, Clemente was the Green Party Vice Presidential running mate with Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney. The pair comprised the first women of color ticket in American History. Clemente has been a frequent contributor on CNN, C-SPAN, MSNBC, Al Jazeera, and Democracy Now!, as well as a number of other programs. She is a leading scholar on Afro-Latino identity and has been active in the Black Lives Matter movement, as she has been organizing around issues of police brutality since 1998.Friday, March 18, 11 to 11:50 a.m. “Gender and Sexuality on TV: Jessica Jones, Empire, and Transparent,” panel and discussion, Kilcawley Center, Gallery Room. YSU Professor Laura Beadling facilitates a discussion about images of women on television. Free 10-minute relaxation chair massage. Sign up early at the meditation studio on the day of the event. Get in a dancing mood and learn about Indian culture with a new Group X special class: Indian Dancing. Dances from India will be taught in this aerobic and social event. Learn how to defend yourself from attackers in this interactive clinic taught by martial arts expert Andrew Murray. An oft-quoted statistic is that women earn around 78 cents to every dollar a man earns; however, not everyone agrees on the accuracy of this statistic, nor do they agree on the underlying cause for any gap in women’s and men’s wages.
