YSU Police Department Welcomes New K9 Officer, Barkley
The Youngstown State University Police Department is excited to announce the arrival of its newest member, K9 Barkley. Barkley continues YSU PD's K9 program after the retirement of the previous K9, Gino, in May of last year. Barkley, a 1.5-year-old German Shepherd from Holland, joins the department as an explosives and firearm detection dog.
Trained in detecting explosives, firearms and even person-borne odors, Barkley will be an invaluable asset to campus safety. In addition to his specialized training, Barkley underwent a comprehensive five-week training course at Shallow Creek Kennels in Sharpsville, Pennsylvania, with Officer Hope Stoner, who recently assumed the role of YSU’s K9 handler.
“Barkley is excited to meet everyone, and together we’re committed to keeping YSU’s campus and the surrounding areas safe,” said Stoner.
Stoner, who began her journey with the YSU Police Department two and a half years ago, has long been dedicated to both her community and the continuous development of her education and professional skills. Before becoming a police officer, Stoner earned her bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from YSU and completed the police academy in 2020. Currently, she is working toward a master’s degree in Criminal Justice, a testament to her ongoing commitment to learning and personal growth.
“I’m excited to take on this new role with Barkley and contribute to the safety and well-being of our campus community,” Stoner said. “Working with Barkley allows me to continue learning while also making an impact on the safety of our students, staff and visitors.”
Barkley and Stoner’s new partnership will also involve training with local police departments and conducting explosive sweeps at schools and large public events, such as basketball games and other campus functions. Their presence at these events will provide an extra layer of protection, helping to ensure a safe and calm atmosphere for all involved.
“We are proud to welcome Barkley to our team and look forward to the positive impact he will have on our campus,” said Shawn Varso, YSU Chief of Police. “Officer Stoner’s dedication to her role as a K9 handler demonstrates the value of growth and development, and we are confident that she and Barkley will continue to enhance the safety and security of our university.”
The Youngstown State University Police Department is dedicated to providing a safe and secure environment for the YSU community.
