YSU to host Josh Cowan for Shipka Speakers Series

Youngstown State University hosts Josh Cowen as the 2025 Dr. Thomas and Albert J. Shipka Speaker on “School Vouchers, Culture Wars, and Defending the Public Good” at 12:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 22, in the Chestnut Room of Kilcawley Center.

His talk will cover a brief history of school vouchers, a discussion of what the current research says about their effects on kids and families, and an explanation of how vouchers are part of the current historical and political moment.

Cowen is a professor of Education Policy at Michigan State University and a Senior Fellow at the Education Law Center. He has written, testified and spoken on education policy and politics. His writing has appeared in the Brooking Institution Chalkboard, Time Magazine, Dallas Morning News, Houston chronicle, Philadelphia Inquirer and The New Republic.
