YSU grad students unveil Steelton project
Three Youngstown State University graduate students unveil a special presentation about the historic lower west side Steelton neighborhood of Youngstown 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, April 22, in the Youngstown Historical Center of Industry and Labor.
Graduate students in the History master’s degree program with a certificate in Applied History, the students are Denis Crawford, Bailey Yoder, Mike Marine and Jonathan Burns.
The program traces how Steelton developed rapidly with the growth of the Ohio Steel Company, the Lower Mills and eventually the U.S. Steel Ohio Works.
The students and Professor Thomas Leary completed the project during the YSU spring semester. A special segment will display the last bar rolled on the Ohio Works 15 Mill. Additionally, local author Carl Jacobson will read a selection from his book about working at the Ohio Works, “Steel Stories.”
The event, which is free and open to the public, will be in the Harry Meshel classroom of the museum. All former steel company employees, family members of employees, historians and interested parties are invited to attend this event.
The museum is an Ohio History Connection site located at 151 W. Wood Street in Youngstown. It is managed by the History Department at YSU. Spring hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and noon to 4 p.m. Saturdays. The Archives/Library is open noon to 4 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays, noon to 7 p.m. Thursdays and the first and third Saturday of every month.
