YSU Campus Rec available for youth parties, summer camp
Youngstown State University’s Andrews Rec Center is now open to the public on a limited basis, scheduling private parties for children ages 8-15 and a six-week children’s summer camp for children June 18 through August 4.
Both activities will generate revenue during times when YSU students are not using the Campus Rec facilities, said R.J. Markowitz, Adventure Recreation coordinator, and they will enhance the university’s recruitment efforts.
“Just imagine, when a 10- or 12-year-old has an awesome experience at our Campus Rec Center,” said Markowitz. “It’s a huge draw, and it’s going to stick with them someday when they make a college choice.”
Parties can be booked on Saturday evenings only and are limited to 20 or fewer guests. YSU student employees have been trained and will be on staff to assist with either of two private party choices. Options include variations of basketball court usage and a climbing wall, high ropes and challenge course package. Refreshments are available through YSU dining at an additional cost.
Campus Rec staff members are also accepting reservations for the inaugural “Pete & Penny's Summer Camp," which will include activities at the Rec and other indoor and outdoor locations across campus. The camp is open to children 5 and older who have completed Kindergarten through age 12.
Camp sessions will be scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Tessa Padilla, coordinator of Club Sports & Camps, said an optional, extended program will be available for campers who wish to arrive early or stay late. Additional fees will apply.
“Our goal with the camp is to provide a supportive and enjoyable environment where our campers can learn and make new friends,” Padilla said. “Our camp staff will include professionals and trained college students, and they will pay special attention to the age and skill level of each camper.”
