Commencement honorees U.S. Sen. Rob Portman receives an honorary degree and speaks at YSU’s Fall Commencement 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 13 in Beeghly Center. The student speaker is Katina Darkadakis, who is earning a bachelor’s degree in fashion merchandising. Portman, who lives in Cincinnati, served 12 years in Congress and in two Cabinet-level positions – U.S. Trade Representative and director of the Office of Management and Budget – before winning election to the Senate in 2010. Darkadakis has been active in Students in Fashion and Interiors at YSU and also presented research at QUEST the past two years. Recognition luncheon Several faculty and staff were honored at the 18th annual Research Recognition Luncheon in November in Kilcawley Center.

Recognized for their achievements in obtaining external funding in the 2014-15 fiscal year were: The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (Brett Conner, Guha Manogharan, Kerry Meyers and Darrell Wallace); Jane Beese, assistant professor, Educational Foundations, Research, Technology and Leadership; Sherri Harper-Woods, director, Upward Bound; Guha Manogharan, assistant professor, Mechanical and Industrial Engineering; Dennis Morawski, associate professor and chair, Social Work; Gary Sexton, director, WYSU; and Patricia Veisz, director, YSU Small Business Development Center. Kilcawley bank Home Savings and Loan has decided to permanently close its branch in Kilcawley Center. The closing is effective Wednesday, Dec. 23.
