Weirs make second $1M gift to alma mater
Youngstown State University alumni Suellen and Michael Weir are donating $1 million to provide new technology to the YSU Williamson College of Business Administration.
The atrium of Williamson Hall will, in turn, be named in their honor.
“We cannot acknowledge enough Suellen’s and Mike’s generosity and their long-standing commitment to YSU,” President Jim Tressel said. “It is because of folks like the Weirs that YSU is the strong, impactful institution that it is today.”
Kelly Wilkinson, WCBA dean, added: “As with most disciplines, advances in technology has greatly influenced how the world does work. This gift will help further enhance our technology and better prepare our students for career success by using technology in innovative ways to improve learning.”
The donation comes two years after the Weirs provided a separate $1 million gift to establish the Suellen and Michael Weir Scholarship for engineering and sciences majors.
Suellen Weir attended Cardinal Mooney High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in Education from YSU in 1973. Michael and Suellen met at YSU, and Suellen was named homecoming queen in 1970.
Michael Weir, a graduate of North Lima High School, earned a bachelor’s degree from YSU in Mechanical Engineering in 1971, and a master’s in Business Administration in 1977. After graduation, he went on to work for Youngstown Sheet &Tube, Babcock and Wilcox and Ingersoll-Rand. In 1982, he founded Total Equipment Company, a supplier of pumps and air compressors for Pennsylvania and West Virginia, including sales and service.
