Sunday, Feb. 12, 2 to 3:30 p.m. “Black/Jewish Book & Dialogue Club” will be presented at the Jewish Community Center, 505 Gypsy Lane, Youngstown, as part of YSU’s African-American History Month celebration. Monday, Feb. 13, 5:10 p.m. Video and performance artist Ann Hirsch, who examines the influence of technology on popular culture and gender, lectures in the McDonough Museum of Art on campus, presented by the YSU Department of Art. Her immersive research has included becoming a YouTube “camwhore” with more than 2 million video views and an appearance as a contestant on Frank the Entertainer...In a Basement Affair on Vh1. Free.
Monday, Feb. 13, 6 p.m. The film 13th will be screened in the James Gallery in Kilcawley Center as part of YSU’s African-American History Month celebration. The film exposes the rapid increase of black male incarceration and will be followed by a panel discussion led by student organizations Sisters with a Vision and the NAACP. Free.
Tuesday, Feb. 14, 10 a.m. to 2 pm. More than 90 employers from local, regional and national companies will attend YSU’s Spring 2017 Career Fair in the Chestnut Room of Kilcawley Center on campus. Tuesday, Feb. 14, 7:30 p.m. Piano recital by faculty member Sean Baran in Bliss Recital Hall.
Wednesday, Feb. 15 and Friday, Feb. 17, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. American Red Cross blood drive in the Chestnut Room of Kilcawley Center on campus. The drive is open to the public. Individuals are able to donate a pint of blood every 56 days. Donors are encouraged to eat a meal and hydrate prior to giving blood and to bring a list of any medications they are taking. A photo ID is required at the time of donation. The drive is organized by student volunteers in the YSU Honors College. Wednesday, Feb. 15, 5:10 p.m. Guest artist Summer Zickefoose, an interdisciplinary artist residing in northeast Ohio, lectures in the McDonough Museum of Art on campus, presented by the YSU Department of Art. Zickefoose’s sculptures, performances, videos and installations have been exhibited both nationally and internationally, most notably at the Athens Institute for Contemporary Art in Athens, Ga., the Golden Thread Gallery in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and the Raccolte Frugone Museum in Genoa, Italy. Wednesday, Feb. 15, 7 p.m. Mike Stout, internationally-known, socially-conscious singer/songwriter, presents “I Learned More From a Three Minute Record Than I Ever did in School” as part of the YSU Lecture Series on Energy and the Environment. The free lecture is in Room B112 of Cushwa Hall on the YSU campus.
Wednesday, Feb. 15, 7:30 p.m. Youngstown Percussion Collaborative solo and ensemble recital in St. John’s Episcopal Church on Wick Avenue in Youngstown.
Thursday, Feb. 16, and Saturday, Feb. 18. A double-doubleheader with the Penguin men’s and women’s basketball teams in Beeghly Center. The women play Northern Kentucky at 5:15 p.m. Thursday, followed by the men against Wright State at 7:45 p.m. The teams take the hardwood again on Saturday, Feb. 18, the women face Wright State at 4:30 p.m., followed by the men against Northern Kentucky at 7 p.m. More information at www.ysusports.com.
Thursday, Feb. 16, 6:30 p.m. Historian Ken Fones-Wolf of West Virginia University discusses his award-winning book, Struggle for the Soul of the Postwar South: White Evangelical Protestants and Operation Dixie at the Youngstown Historical Center of Industry and Labor, 151 W. Wood Street. The book, co-authored with Elizabeth Fones-Wolf, won the Labor and Working Class History Association’s David Montgomery Award for the best book on American labor and Working Class in 2016. Free.
Friday, Feb. 17, 7 to 10 p.m. The 22nd annual edition of Mad About the Arts, an art-music-dance-wine-food event to benefit the McDonough Museum of Art and 88.5 WYSU, is at the art museum on campus. Tickets are $80. Tickets are $65 for WYSU and McDonough Museum members, as well as YSU faculty, staff, students and fine arts alumni. Friday, Feb. 17, 8 p.m. The Ward Beecher Planetarium presents a lecture by Darren Williams, professor of Physics and Astronomy at Penn State Behrend, titled “Hello! Is Anyone Out There? Some Thoughts on Exoplanets and Life.” Free.
Saturday, Feb. 18, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. YSU’s Lariccia School of Accounting and Finance is providing trained business students and professional volunteers to offer the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. VITA offers income tax preparation and e-filing at no charge to local residents and hands-on experience to skilled business students. The program is offered in computer labs on the first floor of Williamson Hall at YSU through April 8. Williamson Hall is located on 221 North Hazel Street between Rayen Avenue and Wood Street.
