University Archives celebrates Dana's 150th
The celebration of the 150th anniversary of Youngstown State University’s Dana School of Music continues with a new exhibit in the gallery of University Archives on the fifth floor of Maag Library on campus.
The exhibit tells the story of the Dana Musical Institute’s founding in Warren and also includes information about the Music Department of Youngstown College before the two schools merged in 1941.
“The Dana School of Music has consistently educated top-quality musicians and provided a wide variety of cultural programs for the community,” said Cassie Nespor, curator of University Archives. “The task of summarizing 150 years of this dynamic school, its faculty and alumni, is difficult. This exhibit merely highlights some of the school’s achievements.”
The exhibit draws from collections in the University Archives and the Local History & Genealogy Center of the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library. Among the historical items in the exhibit are a concert program from 1944, the 1929 Instituter yearbook, a vinyl record of the 1970 Symphonic Band, a report card from the 1930s, the first uniform of the Youngstown College Marching Band and a 1960s microphone on loan from Communications Professor Fred Owens.
The exhibit is open to the public during regular hours of the library, available here, https://maag.ysu.edu/libraryhourpage. For more information, contact Nespor at 330-941-3487.
