Martyn Moss is a collector of sorts – chairs, desks, tables, cabinets, bookshelves, etc. And he’s all too willing to give them away. YSU manager of Building Services, Moss oversees campus surplus inside the E.J. Salata Complex on Rayen Avenue. His job? Matching people on campus with the furniture they need. Looking for a filing cabinet? – got it. Need a desk? – here you go. Odds are, if you need it, Moss has it. “We don’t have everything, but we have a lot,” he said. “It’s a great place to go to fill the void if your department doesn’t have the budget for new furniture.” The surplus building consists of three large rooms filled with aisles and aisles and stacks and stacks of neatly organized office desks, student desks, filing cabinets, chairs, tables and even a set of large, red lockers from Stambaugh Stadium. “Items come from all parts of campus,” Moss said. “When offices are moved, renovated, redecorated – anything you would think that is in an office comes to us. And some of the furniture we get, how it was made, it can last forever. If an unwanted item still has value, we get it.” This semester, surplus is open noon to 3:45 p.m. on Fridays and otherwise by appointment with Moss. Moss said the amount of time an item stays in surplus varies. Some may be there for a few days, others more than a month. Items unclaimed after a year are disposed of or donated.
