Student's intervention plan earns scholarship to national conference

Lauren Hoag, a student in Youngstown State University’s School Psychology program, was awarded a scholarship to attend the National Association of School Psychologists Conference in Chicago in February, including roundtrip airfare and $500 to support conference fees.

She submitted a family-based intervention plan, titled "Rise and Shine, it's Learning Time – the Parent/Student Attendance Education for Partners for Success and Innovation,” in a contest for third-year graduate students from Ohio universities completing School Psychology programs this year. Her plan was chosen as one of the top four submitted, based on a blind peer review process by a jury of School Psychology faculty members from across Ohio. Four scholarships were awarded.

“We’re very proud and happy for Lauren,” said Richard VanVoorhis, associate professor and director of YSU’s School Psychology Program. “Her success demonstrates that we and our School Psychology candidates are able to successfully develop school and family systems-based interventions through their work.”

He said that several YSU School Psychology faculty members and candidates will be presenting at the national conference.

A native of Strongsville, Ohio, Hoag earned a bachelor’s degree in Speech and Hearing and a master’s degree in Education, both from YSU, and expects to complete the School Psychology program and graduate in May 2018 with an Educational Specialist Degree in School Psychology. Now serving an internship in the Chardon Local Schools, she was previously employed as an instructional assistant and one-on-one aide for students with disabilities at Lincoln Park Academy, a charter school in Cleveland.

YSU’s School Psychology program is housed in the Beeghly College of Education. Students who successfully complete 45 credit hours of coursework are awarded the Master of Education degree in Intervention Services; an additional 54 credit hours are required for the awarding of the Educational Specialist degree in School Psychology.
