Roger Gregg presents master class in audio drama

Youngstown native Roger Gregg, an award-winning playwright, composer, audio-producer, musician and actor, will lead a master class in audio drama 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 12 at Bliss Hall on the campus of Youngstown State University.

Students in “Seminar in Audio Drama,” as well as students and faculty in the Dana School of Music and the theater department, are invited to attend.

Gregg has written plays for Crazy Dog Theatre, Dublin Youth Theatre, TEAM Theatre, The American National Audio Theatre Festival, Graffiti Theatre, and The Gaiety School of Acting. His stage and radio plays have been produced professionally by companies in Ireland, Germany, Canada, America and Australia.

His Crazy Dog audio-movie productions have won five American Mark Time Science Fiction Awards, two American Ogle Fantasy Awards, the HOTPRESS “Audio Comedy of the Year” and two AUDIOFILE magazine Golden Earphone Awards. In 2006 in a special feature reviewing his work, BBC Radio 4 hailed him as “one of a handful of truly great radio dramatists.”

Also a composer and sound designer, Gregg has written and produced music and soundscapes for scores of theatre productions, including several for the acclaimed Barabbas Theatre Co for which he was nominated for Best Sound Design in the 2009 Irish Times Theatre Awards.

A voice actor in scores of commercials and animation series, one of his most noted roles is Eddie the Computer in the Sony Award winning “Hitch-Hiker’s Guide to The Galaxy” sequels on BBC Radio 4. In 2017 he was voice director for Brown Bag production’s “Angela’s Christmas.” He is currently recording his role Glarg for Disney’s animation series “SpaceChickens.”

Since 2002, Gregg has been the Gaiety School of Acting’s tutor on Acting in The Audio Medium as well as the G.S.A.’s director and tutor of its Cabaret course. With bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Theatre, Gregg was the lecturer on Acting & Voice and Dramatic Writing at American College Dublin from 2012 to 2016.

His most recent works include creating the live sound and music for Carpet Theatre Company’s production of “The Flood,” a show designed for the blind and visually impaired. He also recently composed, recorded and produced the music and soundscapes for his radio series “The Bee-Loud Glade,” a 12-part experimental program for LYRIC FM. In 2016, his work, “The Rapture of Hugo Ball,” was a hit production in the 2017 Seen & Heard Festival and later played at the Carlow Arts Festival.
