Mission College students awarded scholarships
Two Youngstown State University students taking part in Sister Jerome’s Mission College, a program of the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown, have been awarded scholarships for the 2017-18 academic year.
Kevin D. Talley Jr. of Hermitage, Pa., a senior Social Work major, received the Bruce A. Roberts Memorial Scholarship; Sarah L. Ludwick of Austintown, a junior also majoring in Social Work, received the Karen R. Murphy Beatitude House Scholarship.
Talley expects to graduate in December with a YSU undergraduate degree in Social Work. A graduate of Farrell High School in Farrell, Pa., he also served two years in the U.S. Navy as master of arms in the military police.
Ludwick is on track to graduate from YSU next year, also with a degree in Social Work. She is a graduate of Beatitude House, a program of the Ursuline Sisters that serves homeless women and children, and Hubbard High School.
Talley and Ludwick both joined Sister Jerome’s Mission College program in August 2016. The program aims to break the cycle of generational poverty by helping students from low-income families succeed in college.
In addition to pairing students with knowledgeable mentors who guide them through the higher education experience, Mission College provides participating students with financial assistance for essentials such as food, clothing and transportation so that they can focus on their studies.
