Mathematics profs' gift supports applied numeric analysis
Annette and Richard Burden, professors in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Youngstown State University, have donated $30,000 to the YSU Foundation to support their passion for applied numeric analysis. The endowment honors the memories of their parents, Rocco A. and Elizabeth A. Sedall and Edward O. and Harriet W. Burden. The Burdens said they strongly believe in the importance of the application of numerical analysis to problems arising in the areas of science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine and that the endowment will support and encourage the research endeavors of students and faculty in these fields at YSU. “We anticipate that this endowment will be a lasting tribute to our parents who firmly believed in the value of an education in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine,” they said. The endowment will help promote applied numerical analysis for working professionals and students in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine. Among the activities will be workshops, forums, conferences and speakers on topics in applied numerical analysis, the development of an interdisciplinary minor in applied numerical analysis and the development of a refereed Journal of Applied Numerical Analysis in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine. The endowment also will promote the development of internships or other practical learning experiences and travel for YSU students to make presentations at appropriate applied numerical analysis meetings and conferences. The Burdens will match other donations to the endowment. For more information, contact Annette Burden at 330-941-1816. Annette Burden earned a master’s degree in mathematics from YSU and a doctoral degree in mathematics educational technology with a specialization in numerical analysis from Union Institute & University. She is past president of the International Society of Technology in Education’s Technology Coordinators, was appointed to the MAPLE Academic Advisory Board, and was appointed to serve as co-chair of Ohio’s Cyberlearning Advisory Group. She has also developed numerous upper-level online courses. Burden also holds certifications in System Planning & Management, Instructional Development & Facilitation, and Quality Matters. Burden has been named a distinguished professor for teaching and service three times at YSU. Dr. She is a co-author on the 10th edition of Numerical Analysis and developed the text’s online companion website and ancillaries. Burden also co-authored the Instructor’s Solution Manual and Student Solutions Manual. Richard Burden, emeritus professor at YSU, earned a master’s degree in mathematics and doctoral degree in mathematics, with a specialization in numerical analysis, from Case Western Reserve University. He subsequently earned a master’s degree in computer science from the University of Pittsburgh. Burden has been named a distinguished professor for teaching and service three times at YSU. He was also named a distinguished chair as the chair of the Department of Mathematical and Computer Sciences. He wrote the Actuarial Examinations in Numerical Analysis from 1990 until 1999. He has co-authored two internationally renowned texts, Numerical Analysis, now in its 10th edition, and Numerical Methods, now in its 4th edition. He also co-authored the Instructor’s Solution Manual and Student Solutions Manual for both texts.
