Mason, Poland high schools join in on Wind and Percussion Invitational

More than 200 high school musicians are expected to take part in Youngstown State University’s Dana School of Music 10th annual Wind and Percussion Invitational Friday, Feb. 26, in Stambaugh Auditorium in Youngstown. The event features master classes with Dana faculty, culminating in at concert at 7 p.m. Guest high school groups include the Poland (Ohio) Seminary High School Wind Ensemble, conducted by Dana School of Music alumni Nicholas Olesko and Jeffrey Hvizdos, and the Mason (Ohio) High School Wind Symphony, conducted by Robert Bass. In addition, the YSU Percussion Ensemble, directed by Ed Davis and Dustin May, and the YSU Wind Ensemble, conducted by Stephen L. Gage, will perform. YSU faculty soloist is James Umble, professor of Saxophone. The YSU Percussion Ensemble opens the concert, followed by the Poland Seminary High School Wind Ensemble, the Mason High School Wind Symphony and the YSU Wind Ensemble. Umble will join the band as soloist on John Williams’ Escapades, whose music comes from the movie, “Catch Me If You Can.” The ensemble's feature work on this concert is Mason Bates' Mothership. The concert concludes with a combined band of Poland Seminary HS Wind Ensemble seniors, Mason HS Wind Symphony seniors, and YSU Wind Ensemble section leaders, who will close the program with John Philip Sousa's "Stars and Stripes Forever."
