Lecture Series on Energy and the Environment kicks off fourth year

The Youngstown State University Lecture Series on Energy and the Environment kicks off its fourth year with an array of presentations on topics ranging from Beach Buddies to air pollution.

The lectures, sponsored in part by the James Dale Ethics Center, are 7 p.m. Wednesdays in Room B100 of Cushwa Hall on campus, except for two presentations on Thursdays, Oct. 5 and 12. The talks are free and open to the public.

The lecture series is organized by Ray Beiersdorfer, YSU Distinguished Professor of Geology.

Sept. 6, Paula Mouser, University of New Hampshire, Biodegradation of fracturing fluid additives: key microbial players and metabolisms influencing organic compound fate in shale produced fluids, via Skype.

Sept. 27, Robert Steneck, University of Maine, Climate Impacts on Lobster Fisheries in Maine and Coral Reefs in the Caribbean, via Skype.

Oct. 4, Mark Z. Jacobson, Stanford University, Roadmaps for transitioning all 50 U.S. states to wind, water, and solar power for all purposes, via Skype.

Oct. 5, Thursday, Merrily Mazza, Lafayette Colorado City Council, Lafayette Colorado’s Climate Bill of Rights and Protections, live in person.

Oct. 25, Bill Dale, Founder of Beach Buddies, a volunteer beach cleaning charity, based in the Isle of Man, live in person.

Nov. 1, Kim Anderson, Oregon State University, Mobile Device for Measuring Chemical Exposures, Location and Respiratory Health and Comparisons with Conventional Technologies, examples from Ohio, Oregon, New York, Africa and Peru.

Nov. 8, Implications of Yesterday’s Election for Energy and the Environment, panel discussion moderated by Beiersdorfer.

Nov. 15, Andrew Barbour, U.S. Geological Survey Induced Seismicity, via Skype.
