High schoolers visit campus Oct. 1 for annual YSU MathFest
Juniors and seniors from more than 40 high schools converge on the Youngstown State University campus Thursday, Oct. 1 for the annual YSU MathFest. Nineteen workshops will be offered by YSU faculty and students from the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, including “The Mathematics of Social Networks, “ “Pricing Peril: An Intro to Actuarial Science” and “The Mathematics of Cardiac Cells.” In addition to the workshops, students will meet YSU students, interact with faculty members, and explore what it’s like to get an undergraduate degree in mathematics or a STEM-related field at YSU. In addition, students are encouraged to participate in individual and/or mixed team mathematical competitions. The day concludes with guest speaker, Dr. John Holcomb from Cleveland State University, who will talk about why students should consider a career working with data. A continental breakfast is provided for teachers, and each student will take home a YSU Math t-shirt, along with a folder with information about careers in mathematics and STEM-related fields.
