CANCELLED: Toni Morrison documentary free screening March 19

The Foreigner's Home, a documentary film that explores the vision and work of Nobel Prize laureate Toni Morrison through an exhibition she guest-curated at the Louvre, will be screened 6 p.m. Thursday, March 19, at the McDonough Museum of Art on the campus of Youngstown State University.

Also included in the free public event is a discussion with the filmmakers, Rian Brown-Orso and Geoff Pingree of Oberlin College.

Morrison, who died Aug. 5, 2019, is recognized as one of the most influential writers in American literary history, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, the National Book Critics Award and the Pulitzer Prize.

In 2006, the Louvre asked Morrison to curate an exhibition that became “The Foreigner’s Home” and included the author in conversation with other artists about the idea of “the foreigner.” Morrison’s son, Ford, shot video footage throughout the two-week event. Morrison later agreed to grant Oberlin exclusive access to Ford’s Louvre materials and permission to make a film.

Brown-Orso is an independent filmmaker, visual artist, and associate professor of Cinema Studies at Oberlin College. She grew up in Boston, studied visual art at Massachusetts College of Art and earned a master’s of Fine Arts degree in film from the University of California, San Diego.

Geoff Pingree is an Emmy Award-winning documentary filmmaker, a photographer, writer, and professor of Cinema Studies at Oberlin College. He earned both a master’s and doctorate in English and American Literature and Film Studies at the University of Chicago and, before coming to Oberlin, worked in public television in Washington D.C., where he also directed Catholic University’s program in Media Studies and George Washington University’s Institute for Documentary Filmmaking.
