Bliss Hall hosts postcard art show through Nov. 21
Postcard-sized artwork by 150 high school juniors and seniors from across Northeast Ohio and Western Pennsylvania is featured in the second annual High School Mail Art Show running Oct. 29 through Nov. 21 in the Judith Rae Solomon Gallery in Bliss Hall on the campus of Youngstown State University.
Admission to the gallery is free. The exhibit, sponsored by the YSU Department of Art, is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. An opening reception and award ceremony will be held in the Gallery 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8.
Mail art is an artistic movement focused on sending small scale works through the postal service. It was developed in the 1950s as a means for artists to connect with other artists. It is a way to share their work in an alternative network from the traditional art market, although, it is quite common now to see exhibitions of mail art in gallery spaces.
Area high school students were invited to create an image on a size and thickness of paper that can go through the mail as a postcard. One hundred fifty pieces of artwork from 16 school districts in Ohio and Pennsylvania in a variety of media and themes were entered, and will be juried by YSU Art Professors Claudia Berlinski and Christine McCullough.
Parking is available in the M30 Wick Avenue deck for a nominal fee. For more information, call 330-941-2307.
