Award-winning math prof keynotes Women in STEM events

Minerva Cordero, an award-winning mathematics teacher and scholar, gives the keynote address at the 20th annual Edward W. Powers Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Career Workshop and Lecture Series at Youngstown State University. 

The lecture, titled “The Power of Mathematics and Mathematical Thinking,” is 4 p.m. Friday, March 3, in the Ohio Room of Kilcawley Center on campus. It is free and open to the public.

The following day is the Powers Women in STEM Career Day, 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m in the Chestnut Room of Kilcawley Center. The event, which features panel discussions and hands-on activities, is designed to expose young women in grades 6 through 12 to career opportunities in STEM. Parents can receive college planning and financial aid information and take campus tours. 

Registration deadline for the Career Day March 3. The workshop and lunch are free to all 6th to 12th grade women. Cordero is the associate dean of the College of Science and a professor of Mathematics at the University of Texas at Arlington. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from the University of Puerto Rico and a master’s degree in Mathematics from the University of California at Berkeley. She has a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Mathematics from the University of Iowa. Cordero has many publications in mathematical journals and many teaching awards, including National Science Foundation grants.
