Rachel Abrahams, research engineer at the Air Force Research Laboratory in Florida, is the keynote speaker at the 19th annual Edward W. Powers Women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Career Workshop and STEM Lecture Series at Youngstown State University.
The Career Workshop, designed to expose young women in grades 6 through 12 to career opportunities in STEM fields, is 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, March 5, in YSU’s Kilcawley Center. The STEM lecture will be 4:30 p.m. Friday, March 4 in the Ohio Room in Kilcawley Center. The lecture is free and open to the public.
The workshop is open to all middle and high school girls from counties in Northeast Ohio and Western Pennsylvania. Students attend two panel discussions and two workshops. Parents can receive college planning and financial aid information and take campus tours while their daughters participate in the workshop.

Abrahams is a manufacturing and industrial engineer working as a ferrous materials lead research engineer for the Damage Mechanisms Branch of the Air Force Research Laboratory, Eglin Air Force Base, Florida. Abrahams received a bachelor of science degree in Biological Sciences (Microbiology with Chemistry Option, 2000) from the University of California-Davis, and a bachelor of science degree in Manufacturing Engineering and Industrial Engineering (2004) from California State Polytechnic University. She also earned a PhD in Manufacturing and Industrial Engineering with a concentration in Casting Materials Science and Manufacturing (2010) from Pennsylvania State University.
