81st YSU Press Day attract 300 budding journalists
About 300 middle and high school students and advisers from nearly a dozen schools are slated to attend the 81st Press Day at Youngstown State University 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 21, in Kilcawley Center.
The event, presented by YSU’s Anderson Program in Journalism in the Department of Communication, features presentations by 25 journalists, media professionals and educators from across northeast Ohio, along with more than two dozen YSU student journalists.
Shelley Blundell, Press Day director, said the event includes presentations on tackling student media censorship at the high school level, and hands-on demonstrations of skills and tools that can help elevate reporting for different student media types.
She further noted that a panel discussion is scheduled including Massillon-Washington High School (Massillon, Ohio) representatives on their student media coverage of the historic inauguration of Chicago mayor and Massillon-Washington alumna Lori Lightfoot.
The keynote event will be a press conference with the Youngstown Phantoms Hockey Team, facilitated by YSU Assistant Athletic Director of Marketing and Promotions, Robb Schmidt.
