Sponsored by the Ohio Academy of Sciences and Youngstown State University, the Ohio Academy of Sciences District 15 Lake-to-River Science Day 2023 will be held in-person on Saturday, March 16, 2024.

About Lake-to-River Science Day

Lake-to-River Science Day is one of 16 regional science fairs in Ohio that are sanctioned by the Ohio Academy of Science. The region represented by the Lake-to-River district comprises Ashtabula, Trumbull, Mahoning, and Columbiana Counties. Science Day is an annual event sponsored by Youngstown State University, regional businesses, and civic organizations. Each year Science Day attracts hundreds of science research project entries from public, private, and parochial students in grades 5 through 12.

The deadline for entry in the District 15 Science Fair IS February 26, 2024.

This year there is NO COST to participate! A generous grant from the Voinovich School at Ohio University is covering the cost for students to register for District 15 Lake-to-River Science Day.

Participation in Science Day is a rewarding and enjoyable experience. Through participation in Science Day, students compete not only for a wide variety of prizes and recognition of accomplishment but most importantly, they get to experience science and discovery first hand. Student contestants in grades 5 through 12 whose projects are judged "superior" may be eligible for competition at State Science Day will be held virtually in April. Registration for the State competition is March 5, 2024-April 2, 2024. More additional information on Virtual State Science Day see district page and Science Day Information.

Student

• All registration material must be submitted through ProjectBoard. Lake to River District 15 Science Day online registration is available at https://projectboard.world/oas and create a student account (NOTE: You cannot create a student account until your teacher has created their class in ProjectBoard. They should provide you with your unique class code)

1. Follow these instructions to create your account and begin your project. Follow directions for uploading your forms and project information, including choosing preferred category for project. Ohio Academy of Science is now using Intel ISEF categories.
2. Here are additional instructions on uploading your project.
   1. Weekly virtual support meetings are available every Monday from 3-4pm.

  • Form 1: Checklist for Adult Sponsor (Intel INSEF Forms)*
  • Form 1A: Student Checklist / Research Plan (Intel INSEF Forms)*
  • Form 1B: Approval Form (Intel INSEF Forms)*
• Additional forms may be required depending on project. Go to Rules Wizard to find out if any additional forms are required.
• Intel INSEF forms are available at Intel ISEF Forms.

The Science Day Information Mailer* has general information about Science Day 2024. The ProjectBoard Registration is essential for student participation, and it must be entirely completed including the uploading of all forms.

The ISEF Rules Wizard can also help you decide what additional forms you need. KEEP THE ORIGINALS of all forms with your project (in a folder or at end of your report). Should you go to State Science Day, you will need originals for State Science Day.

Research Plans

Prior to starting a project, ALL students should prepare a Research Plan that includes permission forms and consent forms. Form 1A: Student Checklist Research Plan Instructions*.

The rule governing review of science projects that include humans or hazardous materials is at International rules pre-college science research.

Schools will need to form a Review Committee (Teachers, Principal, Counselor, perhaps) to review those projects that fall within these guidelines. The forms for reviewing these projects are Human Subjects forms. The Human Subjects Review and Release Forms and the Human Subjects Informed Consent Forms are combined into a single form located at Human Participants.

IMPORTANT!

Students present their work in POSTER FORMAT.​​​​​​​ Commercial apparatus and demonstrations as part of the student presentation will not be permitted. Students must make a presentation of and discuss the work done, not perform a demonstration. Logbooks, photographs, lab report, graphs, charts, etc. will be allowed and are an expected part of the presentation, but the poster is two-dimensional ONLY.

EXCEPTIONS: If equipment or materials are developed as part of this project, such as Engineering Design prototypes or equipment designed and built to complete scientific research and to collect data for a project, then the item can be displayed but must meet these standards

1. It fits within the display dimensions describe in the Science Day Standards (must fit on table in the approx. 2' x 3' area, cannot be on the floor)
2. It is not listed as an item "NOT ALLOWED at Project Display" in the Science Day Standards.
3. It meets Safety Regulations found in Section III, part j of Science Day Standards"

Guides and standards for student projects can be found through the Ohio Academy of Science. It is highly recommended that students and teachers download and read these documents. They contains an enormous amount of useful information about planning, setting up, and presenting your projects.
